Description

Rolex Explorer Super Precision Ref. 5500. Extremely rare 34 mm case Explorer with “underline gilt dial” and Double T<25 Swiss designation. The 'underline' dials are highly sought after by collectors due to their rarity and historical significance. Some theories suggest that the underline was used by Rolex to denote the transition from radium to tritium luminescent material for the watch's hour markers and hands. The 'T<25' designation refers to the amount of tritium used in the luminescent material on the dial. The fact that this watch features both an underline and the 'Double T<25 Swiss' designation makes it highly sought after by collectors due to its rarity and historical significance. The stainless steel case is in good condition and retains its original finishing, although some polishing may have been done over the years. The dial retains its glossy mirror effect, with only minor signs of aging, particularly in the 6 o'clock area. The original lume on the markers and hands has aged to a creamy color, which is desirable among collectors. The watch is paired with an Oyster extensible bracelet stamped "4.67" indicates that it was manufactured in 1967, adding to the authenticity and vintage appeal of the timepiece.

PIONEERING WATCHES

In the early 1950s, Rolex developed professional watches that served as tools and whose functions went far beyond simply telling the time. These watches were intended for professional activities, such as deep-sea diving, aviation, mountain climbing and scientific exploration. The watches generated lasting enthusiasm and became known as the watches of achievers.
