It features a solid "E - Etanche" screw-down case back with additional sapphire case back. An estimated 1,350 examples were produced in all metals. In 1986, Patek Philippe replaced the long-lived Ref. 2499 with the new Ref. 3970 with an updated caliber based on Lemania. CH27-70Q that replaces the previous Valjoux caliber. While adopting similar aesthetics to the previous reference, ref. 3970 features a smaller case with a diameter of 36 mm. The reference was produced in all four metals, yellow gold, rose gold, white gold and platinum, for a total of four series and a production run of more than 19 years. It is estimated that more than 4,000 examples of the reference were produced over the course of production.
