The Patek Philippe 3970EJ, introduced in 1986, is one of the most revered models from the legendary Swiss watch maker and is the third iteration of its perpetual calendar chronographs.
The 3970 was part of Patek Philippe’s efforts to create watches that embody both technical prowess and understated elegance. It succeeded the famous 2499, a watch that is considered one of the finest examples of watchmaking, and was itself replaced by the 5970 in 2004. During its production run, the 3970 was available in different case metals, with the “EJ” designation referring to the 18K yellow gold case. This version is especially beloved for its classic aesthetic and the warmth of its yellow gold, which complements the sophisticated dial layout.
With a 36mm diameter, the 3970 is smaller than modern chronographs but remains perfectly balanced, offering an elegant and refined presence on the wrist. Its intricate dial features a perpetual calendar with a moonphase indicator, day, date, month, and leap year displays, alongside the chronograph function. This combination of complications makes it not only a technical masterpiece but also a symbol of the brand’s dedication to precision and luxury.
This fine example from 1995 features a third series dial, 18ct yellow gold case and is fitted to a brown leather strap with a deploying buckle. Although this watch does not have the original box and paperwork, it does come with an extract from the archives of Patek.
