Description

Maunder Watch Co are proud to present a Military Issue double reference Rolex Submariner ‘Milsub’ Ref. 5513/7. The ref 5513/7 is a highly coveted and rare variation of the iconic Military Submariner. Originally produced for the British military in the 1970s, this watch combines the robust functionality of the classic Submariner with unique military modifications. These watches were never designed for civillian use. The combination of an historically important partnership for Rolex and the incredibly low numbers in exsistance make the ‘milsub’ a highly sought-after collectors item. Rolex initially supplied watches to the British Ministry of defence from 1972 onwards, in 1977 they produced the ‘Double reference’, a model carrying the 5513 code between the lugs, but additionally the 5517 reference engraved on the rear of one lug. This is one of the rarest variations, it is thought around 150 double reference were delivered to the MOD and around 20 are reminaing in their full spec configuration. This particular watch was produced in 1975 and issued in 1977 and the watch is accompanied by service records seen in photo No.4. The most important features of this watch inculde; the original over sized ‘gladiator’ sword hands, a full 60 minute marked bezel, fixed case bars for extra durability, dial marked with a ‘circle T’ to denote the Tritium used in the dial construction, engravings to denote the piece as property of the Crown, MOD service code, issue number and year for issue. The Rolex Submariner

The Rolex Submariner is without a doubt one of the most successful Rolex models in history. Not only because it more than aptly served its purpose as diver’s watch, although I am pretty sure only a small number of Submariners has ever seen a spat of water. Its appearance in several James Bond movies certainly helped as well. If you omit functionality and marketing, the Submariner success is mainly due to its elegance as a timeless dress watch. It’s just one of those watches you keep looking at, regardless of wanting to know the time of day. The Submariner was launched in 1953 and officially presented at the Basel Fair in 1954.
