Let’s go even further back to the history of the nautilus. Audemars Piguet have some thanks for the creation of the Nautilus. The Royal Oak which came out in 1972 and completely defined the way which people saw luxury sports watches. Due to the incredible success of the Royal Oak, Patek decided it was time to bring out its own sports model watch with the finishes of the most impeccable quality that they are known for. The inspiration for the nautilus was taken from the shape of ships portholes. The case was created using a solid back case Monobloc and the very recognisable octagonal bezel secured to it by 4 screws to ensure that the watch is completely water resistant. The Nautilus was inspired after the designer Gerald Genta read the Jules Verne’s novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea where the Nautilus was the submarine used by the hero of the story, Captain Nemo. The original Nautilus ref 3700/1 was made out of stainless steel and nick named Jumbo due to the large case size of 42mm which was considered large in the 70’s.
