Description
Onyx Datejust - When it comes to gold Rolexes the first thing coming to our minds are Day Dates which were exclusively made in precious metals. Another watch that, also has variants in white, yellow and even pink gold is the Datejust. White gold and pink gold examples are immensely rare but even yellow gold examples are becoming scarce. When rare dials come into the picture then the game changes. That being said, Datejusts since the early 1970s have been made with stone dials too. To mention a few, Lapis, Onyx, Jasper, Bloodstone and Malachite. The all time classic and probably most sought after stone dial is the Onyx which had its debut with the 1601 reference and was made for approx. 30 years. The example offered here is a 1977 reference 1601, the last year of production for a plexi Glass Datejust. It is fitted with a flawless and beautiful Onyx dial. The watch is overall in excellent condition for its age which a strong case retaining healthy lugs and a bracelet showing only little wear from age. This watch was initially sold by Bucherer in Geneva to a Kuwaiti client and comes with full paperwork including original purchase invoice, Warranty, hang tag, booklet and leather wallet. This is a rare opportunity to buy an excellent condition 1601 with Onyx dial, accompanied with very good documentation.

The year 1945 saw the birth of the Datejust, the first self‑winding wrist chronometer to indicate the date in a window on the dial. A watch of great distinction, the Datejust was equipped with a Jubilee bracelet created specially for it and a fluted bezel, making it immediately recognisable as a Rolex. It is the pillar of the Oyster collection. Initially for men, it became available in various models for women in the course of the following decade.
