Patek Philippe 18k yellow gold ref. 2554/7J ‘Manta Ray’, made in 1964 Introduced in 1950 and produced through to the 1960s, the ref. 2554 was made in a variety of different styles. Perhaps the most well-known shape of the series is the ‘Manta Ray’, with an angular flared side resembling the marine creature. It is this particular reference that inspired the limited edition ref. 5100 launched in the year 2000. This specific example of the ref. 2554 features a hand textured 18k dial, possibly by the hand of Gilbert Albert. Like his Ricochet collection, the nature-inspired shapes and textures of his designs were groundbreaking at the time and are still respected to this day. The archive reveals that this example originally had a bracelet. Interestingly, this is only the third known example of a ref. 2554/7 to appear with this case and dial configuration.
