Watch details

Extraordinary 18k yellow gold Rolex GMT “SARU” ref. 16758, manufactured in 1984. The present GMT-Master is exceptionally rare. Produced in an extremely small number, reference 16758 is the first Rolex sports watch to be fitted with precious stones. It is known as “SARU” because of the sapphires and rubies used on its bezel which evokes the blue and red Bakelite bezels of the earliest GMT model.  The present specimen stands out for its exceptional condition both of the dial and the untouched case which is still preserving its Rolex sticker on the case back. Amongst the most prestigious Rolex sports wristwatches, it definitely represents a trophy watch for the connoisseurs. The GMT-Master was developed to meet the specific needs of airline pilots. It became the official watch of several airlines, among them the famous Pan American World Airways, better known as Pan Am. Its most distinguishing visual feature was the two-tone bezel which marked daytime from nighttime hours.

As intercontinental travel developed in the 1950s, airliners began to fly swiftly across several successive time zones. For the first time it became important to know the time in various places in the world, simultaneously. It was the dawn of the jet age, and Rolex responded with a watch to match the spirit of the times.
