Watch details

The Rolex Explorer, ref. 1016 is a pillar of the Rolex sport watch collection and held the test of time as it's production ran from 1959 to 1989. This particular 1016 is special because it is an "L-Series," which means it was produced in the final year the model was manufactured. 1016's with this serial number are difficult to find because many believe Rolex made a smaller production run that year as they winded down the production of this reference. Condition note: The watches case, bezel and bracelet are in stunning condition, very sharp and clean with a tight bracelet. The dial has beautiful even patina on the lume but has some light scratching, most notably on the "e" in Oyster under the Rolex lettering. Please feel free to get in touch for additional photos. Rolex on Everest's first ascents
Inspired by knowledge gained from this fascinating chapter of human adventure, the Oyster Perpetual Explorer, launched in 1953 to celebrate the victorious ascent of Everest, immediately acquired iconic status.

In 1953, Sir John Hunt’s expedition, in which Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of Mount Everest, was equipped with Oyster Perpetuals.

In the early 1950s, Rolex developed professional watches that served as tools and whose functions went far beyond simply telling the time. These watches were intended for professional activities, such as deep-sea diving, aviation, mountain climbing and scientific exploration. The watches generated lasting enthusiasm and became known as the watches of achievers.
