Rolex GMT-Master Matte Quickset "Box and Papers"

REF. 16750

An excellent example of the "Transitional" GMT-Master, featuring a matte dial and plastic crystal, but an updated quickset movement. Purchased from the original fastidious owner, the watch comes complete with original box and papers, various service documentation, original sales receipt, and a bag of parts that were changed at service. Watch has recently been polished and serviced and is keeping good time. A nice complete kit that would make any GMT collector happy.

Case has been recently detailed, and a nice narrow chamfer is visible on the edges. Serial and reference numbers are clear and visible between the lugs. Watch features a black bezel insert, as indicated on the sticker affixed to the outside of the box.

Original matte dial in excellent condition. During the last Rolex service, the hands were replaced with luminova hands that glow in the dark. Because the luminous on the dial is very light cream, the hands look generally matched, but they do glow in the dark.

Watch comes on a 78360 bracelet with 12 links and 580 end pieces. There is little stretch. The original oyster lock clasp was replaced with a fliplock due to wear, but is included with the watch.

The GMT-Master was developed to meet the specific needs of airline pilots. It became the official watch of several airlines, among them the famous Pan American World Airways, better known as Pan Am. Its most distinguishing visual feature was the two-tone bezel which marked daytime from nighttime hours.

As intercontinental travel developed in the 1950s, airliners began to fly swiftly across several successive time zones. For the first time it became important to know the time in various places in the world, simultaneously. It was the dawn of the jet age, and Rolex responded with a watch to match the spirit of the times.
